Riff development — one idea, built into a song

Every riff-based song is the same riff, put through a small number of honest moves. Below is the ledger of those moves, then a transformer that runs the real arithmetic on a riff you type in — no audio, no invented notes, just the exact shape before and after.

The standard motivic-transformation toolkit composers have used since well before Liszt and Berlioz systematised it — reach for one deliberately, rather than by accident.

The transformer treats your numbers as a pure sequence: it does not know or guess your key or scale, so sequence/modulation add a fixed amount to every value rather than force-fitting a diatonic scale. That keeps every result correct for whatever numbering you used — scale degrees or frets alike.

Good to know

What is the difference between sequence and modulation?
The arithmetic is the same — both transpose the idea by a fixed interval. The difference is context: a sequence restates the shape at a new pitch level within the same key, usually right away; a modulation means the surrounding tonal centre itself has moved, so the shift is structural, not just a repeat.
Does the transformer understand my key or scale?
No, and it does not pretend to. It treats your numbers as a pure sequence and applies honest arithmetic — transposition, reflection, reversal, re-timing, slicing — without guessing your key or forcing notes to fit a scale. That keeps every transformation correct for whatever numbering you used.
Can I use fret numbers instead of scale degrees?
Yes. The transformer only does arithmetic on whatever integers you give it, so fret numbers on a single string work exactly the same way as scale degrees — the shapes and relationships transform identically either way.
