Amp Sim and Modeler Settings, Mapped From a Real Amp

Gain, bass/mid/treble, presence and master volume behave the same on a Kemper, a Fractal, a Neural DSP plugin or a Line 6 Helix as they do on a physical amp — turn the knob, hear the change. Snapshots vs Presets: Two Different Jobs

Presets are how you change instruments in a set — a clean rhythm patch to a lead patch built around a different amp entirely. Snapshots are how you change dynamics inside one song without switching patches — toggling a boost, an extra delay tap or a tighter gate on for a chorus, then back off for a verse, all within the same amp and cab.

The mistake is building a new preset for every small change. A snapshot does the job faster, keeps your cab and core amp tone constant, and avoids the small audio glitch some modelers introduce on a full preset change.

A Starting Signal Chain in the Box

Most modelers default to a sensible block order, but it’s worth knowing why: input trim, then drive/boost blocks, then the amp block itself, then cab/IR, then time-based effects, with modulation placed either before the amp (for touch-sensitive chorus or phaser) or after it (for a more processed, effects-loop-style sound).

Do I still need a cab or IR if I’m going straight into an interface?

Yes — always. An amp block with no cab or IR sounds thin and buzzy; the cab/IR stage is what turns a modeled amp circuit into something that sounds like a mic’d speaker.

Why does my amp sim sound harsher than my real amp?

Usually input trim set too hot, or an IR that doesn’t suit the amp block’s voicing. Back off input trim first — a hot input pushes digital saturation that has nothing to do with the amp model’s own gain.

What’s the real difference between a snapshot and a preset?

A preset is a full patch change — different amp, different cab, different everything. A snapshot changes the state of blocks within one patch, the way stepping on a few pedals would on a real amp.

Should global EQ stay on all the time?

Treat it like a mastering EQ, not a tone knob — small, permanent corrections for your monitoring chain, not a per-song setting. Leave patch-level shaping to the amp block’s own EQ.
